The Strange History of Landscaping

Although the term “landscape architecture” has only been around since the early 19th century, landscaping itself has been around since the Garden of Eden. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are legendary and were once one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Although their location has never been verified, the 16HeA 19th-century Dutch engraving of the Hanging Gardens depicts a lush green tropical garden filled with exotic flowers, trees and fountains.

Hanging gardens are the ideal concept of what landscape architecture can achieve. All you need is the right plan, then the tools and people to execute the landscape of your dreams. With the right combination of elements, plants, shrubs, and trees, you can create something so beautiful that you will never want to leave.

The ancient Romans contributed greatly to much of today’s modern art, technology, and literature, and even in areas such as law and engineering. They also created incredibly beautiful gardens that accentuated their unique and elegant architecture, which is still so popular today. As if building something as impressive as the Colosseum wasn’t enough, the Colosseum has a long and well-documented history of plants and vegetation. In fact, 684 species of plants have been identified and catalogued there.

Experts believe that the reason there was and is such a wide range of plants and vegetation in this area is related to the climate, which has changed dramatically over the centuries, favouring some types of plants at a given time over others. The first appearance of what is now considered modern landscaping occurred during the Roman Empire. The ancient Romans combined a wide variety of plants, trees and shrubs with ponds and fountains to create the perfect outdoor space for meditation.

They may have taken some of their ideas from Japanese and Chinese gardens, which were designed to include religious symbols. That way, they could serve as a place of refuge where someone could go to pray or meditate and simply enjoy the lovely fragrance of jasmine and bougainvillea flowers. The ancient Persians are credited with inventing underground aqueducts to keep their sumptuous gardens green and thriving even in an arid environment.

Many of the great Italian painters have left us an excellent and very unique record of the different types of flora that existed on Earth hundreds of years ago. Da Vinci’s paintings often include trees, plants, streams, rocks and other natural elements that give us clues as to what areas such as Rome, Venice and Bologna might have been like 500 years ago.

Today, modern landscapers have a much more challenging task due to how crowded most areas are. They often must work between buildings, shopping malls, busy cityscapes, and many other obstacles to achieve a magnificent landscape design. However, like the ancient Roman landscapers, a truly exceptional landscape architect has a natural ability to understand how to transform an environment into the perfect outdoor space for entertaining, meditation, or just plain fun.
